Classical Chinese Furniture

Classical Chinese Furniture

The simplicity of Classical Chinese Furniture has drawn admires from both the East and West for centuries.

Value and rarity often depends upon wood variety, age and construction, Mr Waterhouse is skilled in identifying the exceptional from the provincial. The difference often only being a sublet characteristic in wood grain or carving.

Classical Chinese furniture is often constructed from three varieties of tropical hardwood
( huanghuali, zitan and hongmu) or of less desirable domestic softwoods.

The wood used is often the first consideration when placing a value on an object.
Alteration and repair is the second most important consideration when valuing Classical furniture.

Often furniture will have replacements and repair, or simply be reconstituted from recycled elements. Rebuilt furniture was often acquired in Asian post 1950.

Hello, I have a four panel antique oriental room divider from my late mother’s estate. I’m trying to get an appraisal as I’m interested in selling. Measurements are 72” x 72”. Each of the 4 panels are 18” wide. It is black laquer with dimensional detail of either ivory or bone. Very heavy. I’m assuming made from Elm wood.

I have a hand carved coffee table and 2 end tables . I believe they are from late 50s or early 60s . It was brought to the states by a boat captain from Formosa.
The coffee table has 3 push through drawers that have carving on the face and the 2 end tables i believe are octagon.

I have a Qing Dynasty intricately carved rosewood (huanghuanli) chair…1910.ca.
It has double dragons, buildings and people, with five bats encircling the base of seat. Two characters appear to be small boys riding on the tails of the dragons. Two characters are carrying what looks like coconuts and a peonie leaf.
There are four characters in center of carved back in a garden. A man and a woman with two other characters on each side of them.
One character appears to be offering a gift to the man and woman. The hind legs have two fish.
The front legs have fù heads. Also…the Dragons are sharing the burden of a large pearl in their mouths.
    What do I have here?
