When asked where do most of the objects come from- a simple answer is everywhere!
Great and interesting object maybe found in any city no matter how large or small.
Robert Waterhouse of PKR Antiques has found antiques of value including interesting Huanghuali furniture, jade and large snuff bottle collections in Kansas City, Birmingham, Atlanta and wonderful Buddhist bronzes in Phoenix and Tucson.
However perhaps of more interest is “where do they come from” in relation to how did they get to America and perhaps the side table of a home in Nashville?
The simple answer is often travel!
The US has had a long history of international curiosity, in addition to missionary and government sponsored work both pre and post WWII.
Many interesting Chinese and Asian antiques entered America via a missionary relative during the pre Cultural revolution. There were many teaching and religious minded Americans in China from 1890-1930, some wonderful books tell of these experience including “Twilight in the Forbidden City” by R. Johnson and other observational visitors during the fall of dynastic China.
Visually impressive, valuable and interesting antiques ( they are not always all three) currently reside in Palm Springs, Arizona, Atlanta, Tennessee, Alabama and elsewhere as a result of these intrepid globetrotting pre cultural revolution missionaries.
PKR Antiques are always interested in viewing emailed images or scheduling and appointment to view in person Chinese and Asian antiques furniture, jade, porcelain, paintings and art in Arizona, Palm Springs, Tennessee including Nashville & Knoxville and Atlanta, in addition to Birmingham and Alabama, PKR Antiques maybe contact at info@pkrantiques.com or 5614203943.
Very interesting Chinese Antiques and paintings, not to mention interesting Vietnamese & South East Asian Modern & contemporary art where acquired by a second group of US traveler- namely the first wave of Post WW2 tourist.
This must not be confused with the government and military personal that were stationed and rebuilt much of Asia after the War. Many very interesting objects were gifted to US personnel or sold to personnel.
Not all objects, actually few, are “treasures”. Some great objects did come back, most were acquired as decorative objects rather than with a eye for the antique.
However- many gifts were given and a great volume of objects were sent state side.
Thus, some fine Chinese & Asian Antiques’s including Huanghuali and zitan furniture, porcelain and imperial ware reside in Palm Springs, Arizona including Tucson and Phoenix , Birmingham, Atlanta and Kansas City from the Government contingent in Asia post War.
Post WW2 tourist- the attractive “otherness” of Asian has always attracted Westerners.
Many Americans visited Asia post war. Many visited Hong Kong either for business or as a launching city into greater Asia.
While in Hong Kong many wonderful Chinese Antiques and paintings were purchased – today many reside in Palm Springs to Arizona to as Far East as West Palm Beach Florida.
While in Hong Kong many Americans walked the famed Hollywood Road. Name’s like Charlotte Horstmann and the dealers operating out of the Peninsula Hotel and the Mandarine Oriental were “must stops” for a businessman or woman with a afternoon to spare.
Today fabulous to the commercial can be found in America, often acquired one lazy afternoon on Hollywood Road, HK.
Lastly, the same school of tourist and business man also traveled further East. Often interesting and valuable modern and contemporary Asian ( Vietnamese and Indonesian) art. Names like Le Pho, Vu
